MEDIA EVENT Sydney Mayors call to keep local government local

Keep Local Government LocalNSW Mayors and MP’s will be joining together to speak against the Coalition’s ‘Fit For the Future’ package which seeks to amalgamate councils across the state.

The 26 Sydney Metropolitan Mayors have unanimously written to the Premier seeking a commitment to no forced amalgamations but have to date received no response.

WHO:              Mayors and MP’s from a cross-party platform of the Independents, Labor, Greens, Christian Democratic Party & the Shooters and Fishers

WHEN:            11AM, Wednesday 25 March

WHERE:           “Tree of Knowledge”, Hospital Road, rear of NSW Parliament House, Sydney

Forced amalgamations, bigger bureaucracies and less democracy is not the answer for NSW local government. Local government must be kept local.

When amalgamations have been forced on locals in other states like Victoria and Queensland, rates have gone up, services have stagnated and residents end up less connected to the councillors who represent them.
