The NSW Police must accept the findings of the Coroner and the demands of Scott Johnson’s family to commence a fresh investigation of his murder in 1988.
The third inquest into Scott Johnson’s death has today found that he was the victim of a gay hate crime.
Greens MP and Justice Spokesperson David Shoebridge said:
“The coroner today has found that Scott was murdered because of his sexuality.
“For too long the NSW Police have been in denial about the appalling motivation for this young man’s death.
“Scott’s family quite fairly believe that the police investigations to date have been far too ready to dismiss this prejudice as the reason for his death.
“The NSW Police must now accept the Coroner’s findings and the family’s calls and immediately commence a fresh homicide investigation.
“Our thoughts are with Scott’s family who have spent too long demanding answers and demanding justice, I commend their strength and tenacity.
“The resources must now be found to ensure every reasonable step is taken to bring this young man’s killers to trial.
“We can be certain there are more families with similar questions and similar pain, our thoughts are with them today.
These findings must trigger a close review of other deaths of other young men in similar circumstances. ” Mr Shoebridge said.
