Heritage

Heritage is not just about old buildings. It is about our natural, cultural and built treasures that have made, and continue to make, a unique contribution to who we are and where we live. These have been handed to us by previous generations, and it’s our responsibility to safeguard them for future generations.

Earlier this year, in Newcastle, there was outrage when it was revealed that the construction of a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet  in the city had destroyed a site containing over 5000 items of Indigenous cultural significance – which should have made it one of Australia’s most significant Aboriginal Heritage sites.

David is working to prevent similar disasters and protect Indigenous and European heritage sites by placing the onus of proof on the on developers to establish that their development does not damage local amenity, heritage, environment, transport and infrastructure facilities.

He is also campaigning to mandate the adaptive re-use of heritage buildings, ensuring they remain a vibrant part of their community.

This speech was delivered on 22.09.2016 in the NSW Upper House. You can read the full debate online here. Priceless Aboriginal Heritage faces destruction from light rail excavation

An immediate stop work order is needed to protect a priceless Aboriginal heritage site from destruction for the South East Light Rail project. The Aboriginal heritage site in Randwick, adjacent to the Royal Randwick racecourse, has already yielded more than 21,000 artefacts from a series of small excavation pits. The entire site faces imminent destruction from machine excavators […]

Aboriginal Heritage – 100% destruction rate from NSW government

With Aboriginal heritage under assault across the State the Greens are renewing the call for standalone Aboriginal heritage laws in NSW that treat Aboriginal heritage with the respect it deserves as a priceless part of this planet’s oldest continuing culture. Whether it is destroying ten thousand years of history for a fried chicken outlet in […]

Hunter heritage under threat

The Hunter is blessed with an enormous depth of Aboriginal heritage, culture and history. The rich soils of the Hunter Valley, the abundant estuaries on the coast, the sandstone escarpments of the mountains and the fertile river flats have been home to Aboriginal people for well over 20,000 years. Rock carvings, scar trees, sharpening grooves, birth […]
