The NSW Government is keeping existing and future home owners in South West Sydney in the dark about coal seam gas mining which could see gas wells as close as 20 metres from people’s homes in South West Sydney. This includes gas mining throughout a 3,000 lot land release announced by Premier O’Farrell in July.

Greens NSW MP and Planning spokesperson David Shoebridge said:

“Barry O’Farrell needs to answer why existing and potential home buyers in these areas have not been informed that their family home could be sharing the block with a gas mine.

“Whether it is Landcom not telling potential purchasers about coal seam gas developments next door, or the Premier spruiking urban sprawl in the middle of a gas field, this is a government that is not giving people the full picture.

“Instead of having playgrounds for children across the road, new residents in South West Sydney are facing the prospect of having coal seam gas mines for direct neighbours.

“These large scale gas projects have been in the pipeline for a number of years. It is inexplicable that housing projects would be slated for the same land, and duplicitous for the government to have kept this fact from the people of NSW,” Mr Shoebridge said.

“The Department of Planning’s recommendation of only a 20 metre buffer in-between people’s homes and gas mining infrastructure shows a complete disregard for the health and safety of Sydney’s residents.

“When Barry O’Farrell announced that he would be fast tracking 3,000 new blocks in South West Sydney, he forgot to mention that there are advanced plans for coal seam gas wells to be built only 20 metres from people’s backyards.

“The Greens are calling on the government to come clean with new home buyers and tell the truth about the potential impact of coal seam gas on all housing releases in Sydney’s South West,” Mr Shoebridge said.
