On 18 February 2012 a serious incident occurred when a police officer repeatedly struck a spectator at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
After the video was played a senior police officer made a public statement which sought to vindicate the actions of the officer involved.
It later came to light that these statements were issued without the benefit of essential information including the identity of the police officer in question.
This is a serious case of police media statements being used to manage a message rather than inform the public.
Footage of the incident and reporting on it can be found here.
Given the nature and seriousness of these matters I have written to the Police Integrity Commission today formally requesting an investigation.
