Young people got screwed over today by the NSW Liberal government when they voted down a Greens amendment in the NSW Parliament that would have given 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote.
Greens MP David Shoebridge said:
“The Liberal government thinks young people should have no say over their future.
“By voting down our amendment to give 16 and 17-year-olds the vote the political establishment just demonstrated to a generation of young people that they don’t take their views seriously.
“For too long the political establishment has excluded young people from our democratic process.
“At 16 you can pay tax.
“At 17 you can join the army.
“Why can’t you have a say in decisions that impact you?
Greens Member for Balmain and spokesperson for Democracy Jamie Parker said:
“The Liberal government have denied tens of thousands of young people the right to vote.
“We need a democracy that works for all of us”.
