The administration of Wollongong University is selling off the campus from under their students’ feet, with a proposed development on a quarter of the site including a retirement facility in association with property developer LendLease.

Greens MP and spokesperson for Planning, David Shoebridge said:

Students would rightly be apprehensive about what a partnership with a property developer will mean for their education.

The university administration are clearly not representing the best interests of staff and students in this undeniably commercial proposal for a public facility.

The university has touted this as about innovation, but private profits from public land is a well-worn path for property developers in NSW.

Students in the Illawarra deserve a world-class education in a world-class facility, not an institution compromised by corporate influence,” Mr Shoebridge said.
