Aboriginal children are 18 times more likely to be targeted by the NSW Police’s “Suspect Target Management Program” according to new data obtained by Greens MP David Shoebridge.
By actively targeting Aboriginal children, NSW Police are directly part of the problem that sees Aboriginal people grossly overrepresented in the criminal justice system.
More than 300 children are on the NSW Police secret blacklist, half are Aboriginal and the youngest child targeted is nine.
The Greens are calling for this racist police program to be immediately scrapped and investigated.
Greens MP and Aboriginal Justice Spokesperson David Shoebridge said:
“STMP is racist policing, pure and simple.
“Just 5.6% of kids in NSW are Aboriginal but this police data shows that 51.5% of the 400 young people targeted by the STMP are Aboriginal.
“There is no legislative basis for STMP and there is no expert evidence that says it reduces offending or makes the community any safer.
“Once a child is on this secret list they are repeatedly stopped, questioned and searched by police, sometimes dozens and dozens of times a year.
“Aboriginal people are already grossly over-represented in the criminal justice system and this secret policing program is ensuring another generation is caught in the mix.
“Our analysis shows that an Aboriginal young person is almost 19 times as likely to be singled out by police under this program.
“It is clear that police are targeting Aboriginal children at far younger ages than their non-Aboriginal counterparts.
“An Aboriginal child under the age of 15 is almost 31 times as likely to be on an STMP than a non-Aboriginal child. That’s an intolerable statistic.
“Something is seriously wrong when policing are placing dozens of children aged 9 to 13 on a secret list that is seeing them repeatedly stopped, searched and questioned.
“This is the kind of program that causes suspicion, anger and division between Aboriginal communities and police.
“I am calling on the program to be immediately halted and for the Police Minister to demand a full report from the Commissioner on this damaging and biased form of policing,” Mr Shoebridge said.
The suburbs with the largest numbers of kids on the STMP are: Wagga Wagga 12 , Campbelltown 11, Mount Druitt 11, Dubbo 11, Cabramatta 10, Windale (Lake Macq) 9, Hinchinbrook (Cabramatta) 8 and Gosford 8. This data is available on request.
