The Liberal National government has today moved NSW closer to a police state, shutting down debate in Parliament on the right to protest.
Greens MP David Shoebridge moved a motion this morning to disallow a government regulation giving police the power to prohibit any protest or demonstration on public land.
These are the same powers police used to eject Sniff Off and other protesters at the recent Above and Beyond music festival.
Greens MP and Justice Spokesperson David Shoebridge said:
“This government has consistently attacked the right to protest and now they won’t even let Parliament debate the issue, NSW is moving closer and closer to a police state.
“This morning we moved to disallow a regulation that gives the police the power to prohibit any protest or demonstration on public land. The Liberal National government gagged any debate.
“There is no doubt that these powers will be abused and will shut down protest. They are designed to increase police powers and whittle away civil liberties.
“These are the same powers that the police abused to evict Sniff Off and other protesters at the recent Above and Beyond music festival.
“Whether it is the Knitting Nannas, the Wollar Three or young people at a festival, the Greens will always stand against this Government’s attempt to criminalise protest.” Mr Shoebridge said.
