At 9am on 29 January St Mary’s Cathedral will have Most Rev Bishop Anthony (Tony) Randazzo hosting the “Red Mass” – an event attended by senior members of the NSW Court where they are lectured by the Bishop about their responsibilities.
Randazzo is Bishop Anthony Fisher’s number two.
Greens MP and Justice Spokesperson David Shoebridge said:
“Events like this that align our justice system with religious institutions are simply inappropriate in this day and age.
“The Royal Commission into abuse clearly identified the Catholic Church as an organisation in which child abuse flourished.
“It is an affront to victims of child sexual abuse in institutions like this to see the leading figures of the justice system publicly aligning themselves in an archaic ceremony with the institution that failed them.
“Members of the NSW community believe in the importance of the separation of church and state, and the true independence of the judiciary. Secret society nonsense like the Red Mass is an affront to this.
“We have heard that at the 2012 Red Mass Cardinal Pell lectured Judges about knowing good from evil. It’s hard to imagine how it could be appropriate to continue this event,” Mr Shoebridge said.
