Figures obtained by NSW Greens MP David Shoebridge show that native forest logging is expensive, destructive and should be abandoned in favour of protection of native forests, and focus on a sustainable plantation industry.

The expansion of logging into Western Lands has served to prop up the Native Forest logging side of Forestry operations, but is considered unlikely to provide an ongoing solution to the extremely poor return on investment this sector represents.

The Forestry Corporation 2017/18 annual report shows that two of the major operators in the sector being Australian Solar Timbers and Baradine Sawmilling left the industry in this year, but have failed to identify the causal factors for this decision, glibly saying these players leaving the industry creates “new opportunities for local businesses”.
