For decades victims and survivors of child sexual abuse were cheated out of fair compensation by powerful churches and other institutions. Now there is a draft law change proposed by the NSW Attorney General that is meant to fix this, but it doesn’t work and will not do justice.
The Greens NSW are demanding better. With submissions closing just before Christmas we worked with legal reform groups and survivors to put together a submission that explains what is wrong with the proposed law change and what is needed to deliver real justice. In short, the law needs to change to allow any past settlement or judgement to be set aside wherever a Court finds it is “just and reasonable” to do so.
We would urge all those interested in justice for victims and survivors to also write to the Attorney General and demand better. You can access our submission here: 201223 Letter to AG re Child Abuse Settlements Bill Final
